March Newsletter 25

The Nursery Manager writes…

Now we have passed the spring equinox, days are much lighter and the weather more temperate. As a result, the children have enjoyed improved opportunities to play outside, which is important for their overall development. Spring 2025 will also see us open our new room – Bunnies 2. Opening a new Bunnies room is an exciting development, and I want to take this opportunity to thank all the Highwood staff for making our setting so popular.

World Book Day

The children enjoyed dressing up and explored various books across the week. Bunnies children explored sensory tiles and played ‘Find the bear’. This followed a reading of the children’s classic We’re Going on a Bear Hunt.

Shrove Tuesday

The children were really interested to learn about pancake day. They filled their trays with lemons and water before enjoying pancakes for their snack.

September school starters

Children starting school in September are booked in at Highwood until Friday 29 August – unless they are term-time-only, in which case their last day will be Tuesday 22 July. Please can you confirm with the office when your child’s last day will be so it can be added to the system?

British Science Week

British Science Week saw Brockenhurst College host a wide range of learning initiatives for students and feeder schools. Some Highwood children had the opportunity to visit an inflatable planetarium in the Main Hall, which provided a unique sensory experience.

Top tips for encouraging children to try new foods…

Get them involved

Children love to help with cooking and baking. Here at Highwood the children help to cut up their own fruit at snack time with a special children’s knife and regularly enjoy opportunities to cook and bake.

Don’t give up

It can take as many as ten occasions of seeing something new on their plate for them to have the courage to try it. It can also take up to 15 tries of a new food for them to decide if they like it or not.

Consistency

Always try to ensure a consistent mealtime routine to encourage good eating habits. Make sure the environment is calm and relaxed and allow them to start with a small amount of food on their plate.
